The FDNY Foundation wants you and your family to stay safe and healthy when you celebrate this Thanksgiving.
As you prepare your holiday meal, please make sure you follow some simple safety tips.
Never leave cooking unattended in the kitchen.
Always keep children away from sources of fire.
Remove loose clothing before cooking and use oven mitts, not kitchen towels, to handle hot pots and pans.
Keep a large lid and baking soda nearby to smother stove-top fires, but never keep dish towels, wooden utensils or potholders near cooking surfaces.
Keep towels and other combustible items away from your heat source and ensure all countertop appliances are plugged directly into the wall outlet and that their cords are not discolored or cracked. Don’t use damaged appliances or extension cords even if they appear to be functioning properly.
Only use large deep fryers outside, away from your home and potentially flammable items and never in your garage or shed.
Don’t use a deep fryer on frozen food.
Never let children near a deep fryer, even when it’s not in use.
When placing food into a deep fryer, use safety goggles and oven mitts.
Keep a fire extinguisher near the deep fryer and never use water to put out a fire.
While you are enjoying the holiday, remember to stay hydrated by drinking water. Get immediate medical care if you develop severe signs and symptoms like extreme thirst, a lack of urination, shriveled skin, dizziness or confusion.
When it’s time, make sure that you and your family feast safely:
Treat cuts by applying direct pressure with a clean dressing, and try to gently clean around the wound with bacterial soap and water, then keep the area around cuts dry and clean by applying a new dressing.
Make sure that everyone knows about potential allergens in the kitchen or meal before they eat your dishes.
Take a walk after eating to avoid food fatigue before you begin travelling, especially if you plan to drive.
Always remember – only call 911 in case of a real emergency.
